John James ‘Sean’ Kelly (born 24 May 1956) is an Irish
former professional road bicycle racer, born in Carrick-on-
Suir. He was one of the most successful road cyclists of
the 1980s, and one of the fi nest classics riders of all time.
Carrick-on-Suir named the town square “the Sean Kelly
Square” under the Town Clock in tribute to his achievements
in the 1982 Tour de France and his bronze medal
at the championship.
